Self Discipline and How To Be Strong
Alright then! The stage is set and you're primed for self discipline. This is how to make sure you're starting strong. The first thing to think about is this - this is a change in your lifestyle, something you haven't been doing until now. Of course it's going to take some adjusting to - that's only natural. The key is to believe that this new behaviour is how it's going to be from now on. If you've ever tried to push a car, you'll know that the first couple of steps are the hardest. Once momentum starts it gets easier and easier. Look at the energy needed to launch a space shuttle - a lot at the beginning until it breaks free of the Earth's gravity, then only small amounts to keep it on the correct path. You could even consider your old ways as a kind of gravity. You will break free if you keep those self discipline boosters firing!
YOUR WORDS If you have tried to give something up or tried to start something new before, notice what they have in common. You tried! Nothing wrong with that, surely? Well, think about this sentence: "She tried to open the door". Do you think she was successful? The language we use can actually influence the outcome. 'Trying' suggests 'having a go at' but there is no real commitment involved. It can also pre-suppose an unsuccessful result. Prove your commitment to yourself that you're not planning to fail, with a big, confident "I AM going to"... Yes you are!
YOUR GOALS Goals are important because without them we just do what we've always done. And you don't want to do what you've always done! Knowing the changes you are making, set yourself a personal target to meet - for instance, a certain weight or a meeting place where you can proudly show off the new, improved you. Now, set yourself a timeframe - realistically, when can you do this by? The important thing here is being realistic. No-one can safely lose 30lbs in 2 weeks! If it's almost impossible, giving up becomes an option. The more attainable your goal, the more you can willingly move towards it. You set it, you achieve it.
BUT WHAT IF... Now we're on the subject of keeping it real, you know that there possibly will come a time (or even times) that you 'fall off the wagon'... you're human, after all! This may be the most important point so far - If you slip up, that doesn't mean that you've failed! These things happen, but that's not a reason to give up and go back to the old ways. Your body is incredibly adaptable and forgiving, so let your mind be the same - just say "oops" and continue your new routine where you left off. Cool - you're still on the wagon! Give yourself a big pat on the back and congratulate yourself, knowing that nothing can stop you as you continue to succeed. The more ongoing momentum your self discipline gives you, the less the old temptations will be noticed - they just won't be relevant any more. Ah, progress!
